Whether you’re a bride, bridesmaid, mother-of-the-bride or beloved guest, you definitely want to look your best for the wedding. If you are going to have your hair professionally styled (and we highly recommend you do!), correct hair prep will make all the difference.
We’ve all heard different opinions about what to do with your hair before the wedding day. Some say that dirty hair is best to work with and will hold a style better while others say washing it at home the night before, or the morning of the event, and not using any products at all, is the key.
When you leave your hair dirty, the natural oils and any build-up on the hair prevents the styling products from performing their best. Dry shampoo can only work so many miracles when it comes to reviving hair! What tends to happen is the hair starts to separate or becomes heavier with products that get layered over each other. If you wash your hair and let it dry naturally, without any products or styling, any growth patterns, curl patterns and cowlicks will be more prominent. Neither of these methods create the best conditions to get the most from your wedding day style.
At Moxie To Go, we believe the key to perfect wedding hair and to look your best for the wedding is getting a GREAT blowout the day before. A professional blowout does everything necessary to set your hair up for success. How many times have you left the salon saying, “I wish my hair looked this good when I do it!” Unless you invest in the shampoo, conditioner, products, styling tools and time, it can be hard to replicate. Having your hair washed and styled for the rehearsal not only makes you feel and look your best, but will be the basis for perfect, second-day hair for the wedding.
The foundation to any good hairstyle starts with your shampoo and conditioner. Stylists usually begin with a clarifying or detoxing type of shampoo. This helps remove build up and impurities on the hair and scalp, which can also experience build-up over time, especially if you are not thoroughly rinsing your hair!
Next, a second shampoo targeting the specific needs of your hair is used. This step may focus on adding moisture, neutralizing brassiness, or repairing damage. Lastly, a conditioner or hair masque is applied to infuse and nourish your hair strands. Sometimes this step can be skipped if the hair gets weighed down easily or the conditioner may only be added to the ends of the hair. A leave-in conditioner styling product may be chosen instead. Once your hair is properly cleansed, it creates the perfect canvas for the products to do their job well.
To achieve volume, smooth out frizz, and create shape, using the right products and blow dry technique is key. On average, stylists use anywhere from four to six products when it comes to styling hair. This helps ensure the hair is getting the moisture, volume, hold and control that is needed for the particular style. In some cases, adding clip-ins may be needed to obtain the desired volume, length and help hold a style in place.
The variety of brushes used for blow drying and the irons used for smoothing and curling are chosen based on your hair type and will extend the life of the style. As a bonus, having a professional blowout means the stylist can get to all those hard-to-reach spots that make you want to throw in the towel when doing it yourself. We’ve all been there!
When it comes to making your blowout last, there are a few insider tips and tricks to keep in mind. Choosing the right dry shampoo for your hair is probably the biggest factor in keeping your blowout looking fabulous. The good news is you have choices! You might prefer a spray, pump powder, or a tinted product that blends in with your natural (or not so natural) hair color. Pick your poison but the one thing that is essential is to use these products correctly!
Make sure to spray and pump at the roots, and section through as you do. After the dry shampoo has dried completely, THOROUGHLY brush all the dry shampoo through your hair to distribute the product evenly. Using this product at night before going to bed, coupled with tossing and turning while sleeping, will help keep the volume in your hair. Investing in a satin pillowcase will also help hair to not become too undone through the night…and will also help prevent wrinkles!
